TrusSteel CFS trusses provide shelter for 110,000 SF of new barracks and battallion operations at Fort Benning, GA, "The Home of the Infantry". The new 13 barracks units were completely framed with cold-formed steel, including hundreds of TrusSteel pre-engineered cold-formed steel (CFS) trusses.
Per the Corps of Engineers demanding specification, all the CFS trusses were 16 gauge steel. "The Corps takes the long view on the life cycle of their buildings", commented Jason Greene of truss supplier Steel Tek Structures, Inc. "They are looking for 50-plus years of service. It is quite different from the mindset of most commercial building designers." Jason also adds that, "The Corps had some very specific engineering hurdles for us to cross, but the engineers at Alpine came through with all of the required submittals and helped us stay on schedule."
Deliveries of trusses for the project went on despite the 9-11 crises. "Base security was very tight for a while after 9-11", said Jason Greene, "but that is very understandable. We are just pleased to be working at Fort Benning, it has such a great military history".
